After receiving a report of tweets directed at Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury leicestershire Police are making initial inquiries.
The 22-year-old, who is of Bangladeshi and Caribbean descent, was abused on social media following Leicesters 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday.
Leicester said that they were appalled by the misuse and revealed on Saturday it had been reported by them to the authorities.
A Leicester City spokesman told Sky Sports News:We are appalled by these comments, which the team has documented to the authorities and into the social media platform where they were made.
Discriminatory behaviour has no place in football or society and we will find out the strongest possible path of actions to be taken against those responsible.
